Bio

Shana Kohnstamm, born in 1970, was raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended both the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the University of Tennessee before pursuing employment in a variety of art careers, including stained glass designer, muralist, bead-maker and scenic artist. In 2006, she created and curated the "Model Artist" show, which featured the works 22 Nashville artists portraying each other in a variety of mediums. Shana is an active member of the Nashville-based Connect 12 Artist Collective and participates regularly in a collaborative of international artists found at SpreadArt.net. Having lived in New York, Florida, Ohio and Massachusetts, Shana is settled once again in Nashville with her husband, Josh, and their dog, Marzipan.

Statement

I cannot remember a time when I was not making art, but it took me a long time to finally be comfortable calling myself an artist. At age 31, I had this epiphany “Art-making is my one lifelong constant”, and for the first time I could see my future following along that same line that had delivered me to that point. It was a simple and life-altering realization.

If beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, then the artist must be a prism. He or she takes that invisible pure light and transforms it into a thing of pure color. Of course, creation is still an act of work, but the aspiration of having those seemingly effortless moments, when the work flows and the artist seems to disappear is enough to drive us forward. I live for those moments of transcendence and the canvas itself is secondary to the process.

F.A.Q.

How long have you been an artist/making art?
As long as I can remember. I vividly recall not having coloring books at home, my mother seemed insistent that I draw my own lines. (Asked about this many years later she said, “Really? Well good for me.”)

Did you go to art school?
I attended art school twice, and surrendered after my third junior year. Crushed, I stopped making fine art for roughly 8 years. During that time I used my talents for building and designing stained glass windows, refining my skills as a scenic artist (for theater, film and TV studio sets), making and designing jewelry and occasionally teaching a class or two.

Sounds like you’ve had many jobs. What was your favorite?

Several years ago I had the opportunity to work as an apprentice ocularist, making prosthetic eyes.  Definitely the most rewarding career I’ve ever had. (For the record, the worst job I ever had was selling luggage to tourists in Pigeon Forge, TN.)

How long does it take you to create a painting?
A smaller canvas can take as few as three passes (each pass can last up to 4 hours during a day) though most often it takes several months to complete. There are several larger pieces that have taken upwards of 3 years to finish. I usually have 6 to 12 pieces in progress at any time.

Do you know ahead of time what the finished piece will be?

Never. Which is why it takes an extraordinary amount of time to complete a piece. The process is quite organic and surprising.

How do you start?

Often with an arrangement of 3 or 4 colors that sing to me. Sometimes it’s an emotion that I want to convey or a phrase that inspires me.

Your work seems very sensual, is that intentional?

It isn’t unintentional. It pleases me to no end that some viewers find my work seductive and alluring while others feel as if they are looking at something naughty. Tells far more about the viewer than myself.

What is neo-biomorphic abstraction?
It’s a style that developed quite organically in my paintings and sculptures. The sensual forms are reminiscent of internal organs, plant-life, sea creatures...all things that have a life force. And yet, these images are still quite abstract, pushing and pulling foreground, background and color.

Got more questions? I’d love to hear from you.
